Recently, we carried out a fuse board upgrade in Offington, Worthing for Maggie and Carl after ongoing issues with their washing machine repeatedly tripping their older fuse board. Alongside the nuisance tripping, the installation itself was showing its age, therefore they decided it was sensible to look at improving both safety and reliability within their home.
However, rather than replacing the board immediately, we recommended starting with an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR).
This allowed us to understand the condition of the installation first and ensure the new consumer unit would be installed onto a safe and compliant system.
Why We Recommended an EICR Before the Fuse Board Upgrade
A consumer unit upgrade is not just about fitting a newer fuse board.
Modern boards offer significantly improved protection, but they can also expose defects that older systems may have been hiding for years. Therefore, carrying out an EICR beforehand gives homeowners a clearer picture of the overall condition of their electrics.
During Maggie and Carl’s inspection, we identified an important issue within the lighting installation.
Several metal light fittings had no earth present.
This was due to older wiring within the lighting circuit. In older properties, this is not uncommon, however metal accessories rely on correct earthing to ensure there is no risk of electric shock.
Without an earth conductor present, those fittings could not remain in place safely.
The Options We Gave the Customer
We strive to give customers clear information and genuine options rather than pushing a single outcome.
Following the inspection, Maggie and Carl had two sensible routes going forward:
- Rewire the lighting circuit to introduce a compliant earth conductor.
- Replace the metal accessories with suitable double insulated or plastic fittings designed for installations where an earth is not available.
Both options were explained clearly, including the practical implications of each.
In this case, replacing the metal accessories was the most appropriate solution for their circumstances, which allowed the defects identified during the EICR to be resolved before the consumer unit replacement took place.
Installing the New Consumer Unit in Worthing
Once the remedial works had been completed, we returned to carry out the consumer unit upgrade.
The old fuse board was removed and replaced with a modern unit incorporating:
- RCBO protection
- Surge protection
- Improved circuit protection and fault isolation
RCBO protection is particularly beneficial because each circuit receives its own dedicated protection. If a fault develops on one circuit, it will not affect the rest of the property.
Alongside this, surge protection devices help protect modern electrical equipment against voltage spikes, which can originate from sources such as network disturbances or switching events.
Following completion, the installation was fully tested and certified.
The Result: A Safer and More Reliable Electrical Installation
For Maggie and Carl, the objective was not simply to stop a washing machine from tripping.
The wider goal was improving confidence in the electrical installation as a whole.
By carrying out the EICR first, identifying hidden defects, completing the remedial work and then installing a new consumer unit with modern protective devices, they now have a significantly safer and more reliable electrical system within their home.
Many electrical issues are not immediately visible. A fuse board upgrade can often reveal that the installation needs a little more attention than originally expected, which is precisely why inspection and proper process matter.
