We were recently called to a property in the Amberley area because the main RCD kept tripping. The RCD was protecting an older rewireable fuse board, so rather than simply resetting it and hoping for the best, we started fault finding to establish what was actually causing the problem.
After some investigation, we traced the fault back to the garage. Some of the electrical work had previously been carried out on a bit of a DIY basis, and one of the sockets ended up full of water, I think we can all agree that water and electricity is certainly not a good mix.
We discussed the findings with the homeowner and recommended rewiring the garage electrics properly. We also carried out an EICR, which uncovered further DIY electrical work that needed rectifying. Things like the wrong sized cables being used and connections not done correctly resulting in loose connections which cause fires.
Alongside putting those issues right, we completed a fuseboard upgrade, giving each circuit individual protection. Therefore, if something similar happens in the future, such as water ingress causing a fault, the affected circuit can trip independently rather than taking out the whole installation.
It is a good example of the type of electrical work we regularly encounter in and around Amberley.
Back to topWe are Alex and Joe from Tide Electrical Solutions, and between us we have 12 years of experience in the electrical industry.
We carry out domestic electrical work throughout Amberley, as well as nearby Storrington and Bury. Amberley sits at the foot of the South Downs and is particularly known for its older and thatched properties, not to mention the absolute beauty that is Amberley Castle, such a rich history for such a small quaint village.
Those older homes are part of what makes working here interesting. They can also make electrical work considerably more challenging.
Some properties still have old rewireable fuse boards and dated wiring, including aluminium cable that has been in service for far too many years. Working on an older cottage is rarely as straightforward as working on a modern property, we tend to encounter things like crumbling walls or lathe and plaster ceilings but we enjoy finding sensible ways to improve the electrics while respecting the building.
Our regular work in Amberley includes consumer unit upgrades, EICRs and electrical inspections, extractor fan installations and small electrical jobs. We also provide same-day call-outs where availability allows, with call-outs starting from £120.
EICRs and emergency electrical call-outs are two of the services we are most commonly asked about by homeowners locally.
Back to topAn EICR is more than a quick visual check of the fuse board. We test the installation and assess the condition of the circuits, protective devices, accessories and other parts of the fixed electrical system. Unlike some other electricians, our EICRs are a fully comprehensive test of every accessible point within the home so you can be assured you will get the full picture of your electrical install.
This is particularly useful in an older property where electrical work may have been altered several times over the years.
The job mentioned above is a good example. The original problem was an RCD tripping because of water ingress in a garage socket. Once we carried out the wider electrical inspection, however, we found additional DIY work that also required attention.
If you have recently bought an older property in Amberley, or you simply do not know when the electrics were last properly inspected, an EICR can give you a much clearer understanding of what you actually have.
Back to topOne issue we come across is dated wiring and equipment that has simply reached the point where attention is needed.
Damp can cause problems too. We have seen metal back boxes behind sockets rust and deteriorate to the point where they begin to crumble. The socket can then start pulling away from the wall, potentially leaving electrical connections exposed.
Older fuse boards are another common sight. Having a rewireable fuse board does not automatically tell us everything about the condition of an installation, which is why we inspect and test before recommending what should happen next.
Where a consumer unit upgrade is appropriate, modern individual circuit protection can make a significant difference. A fault on one circuit does not necessarily have to leave the whole property without power, as demonstrated by the Amberley job above.
